A season of two concerts
“Lydians on the Mount – In Holy Songs of Joy!”
“Hold Out Your Light”
2017 marks 38 years of musical accomplishment of The Lydian Singers. Among those years of service in music, the choir has had a long-standing relationship with the Abbey of Our Lady of Exile at Mount St. Benedict.
While the Lydians have had many collaborative concerts with the Abbey over the years, in 2016, a concert series specifically catered to the Abbey was created, entitled, ‘Lydians on The Mount.’ This Advent, on November 26th 2017 at 6:00 p.m., The Lydians will be hosting its 3rd concert of the ‘Lydians on the Mount’ series entitled, “In Holy Songs of Joy!”
In 1991, the Lydians were invited by long-standing Lydian and Bass vocalist, Selwyn Ragoonanan to perform on the Mount. By his account, the first time that former musical director Dr. Pat Bishop (deceased) went to the Mount, she took an immediate liking to the church and fell in love with the acoustic and with its holy serenity, perfect for the lush choral sound of the Lydians.
During this period, we keep our lamps trimmed and burning and the light in our hearts alive with faith. The choir and steel ensemble will celebrate with readings, hymns and songs with joyful anticipation.
On November 26th over 65 singers, steelpan players, drummers and musical accompanists will assemble under the musical direction of Lorraine Granderson and within the holy walls of the Abbey of Our Lady of Exile for “Lydians on The Mount – In Holy Songs of Joy”.
Tickets for Lydians on the Mount – In Holy Songs of Joy are TT$100 and are available from the information booth at Mount St. Benedict, all members of the Lydians and from the Lydians ticket hotlines: 268-9556 and 338-6024.
As the grand finale of the concert season, the Lydians will also present "Hold Out Your Light", a Christmas celebration of light and music! The theme: “Hold Out Your Light” will explore three beacons of light most treasured at Christmas time and will showcase the power of the Lydian choral sound through the Negro Spiritual.
The call to 'Hold Out Your Light' is one inspired by light prevailing over darkness expressed through the iconic example of the abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman, who led hundreds of the enslaved to freedom by the light of her lamp through the underground railroad. These Negro Spiritual songs performed by the Lydians, will speak directly to that hope Tubman gave to many, and, fused with the season of Christmas, the Lydians will celebrate that light to freedom, along with the light of the world – the saviour born in Bethlehem, who gives joy, hope and peace to all.
“Hold Out Your Light” will also feature all the Lydians’ Christmas favourites, including Gospel, Jazz, Parang and Calypso, set to spectacular lighting effects by North Eleven, with Lighting Design by Celia Wells and Set Design by Hybrid Theory Productions’ Dave Cooper. Sound Design will be done by Kino Alvarez and his team with Costume Design by Ian Smith and Claudette Edwards, Choreography by Allison Seepaul and Adele Bynoe, Creative Direction by Wendell Manwarren and Words by Muhammad Muwakil
