A CHRISTMAS CALABASH! (2016)

The Lydian Singers & Steel present...
A CHRISTMAS CALABASH!

Explore the season of Christmas and togetherness through the folkloric symbol of a Calabash - a Christmas Calabash!

This Christmas, The Lydians will gather around the ‘Christmas Calabash’ as a musical family to perform a range of traditional and newly composed original selections. The concert will take place from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th December 2016 at the Queen’s Hall Auditorium with tickets at TT$200 and several discount specials available for seniors and junior patrons.

TTARP card holders have access to a $25.00 discount on tickets for the Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th of December concerts, on presentation of their membership cards and national identification card. All tertiary-level education students have a chance to see the Thursday 15th show at a TT$175 ticket price on presentation of a valid student I.D. All ticket promotions are available from the Queen’s Hall Box Office only.

Through song, steel and dance, The Lydians will tell the story of ‘Mary and the Golden Calabash’. As the story unfolds, audience members will be invited to gather together in music as The Lydians sing joyfully of the birth of the Christ child. The concert will follow a creolized reimagining of the journey of The Virgin Mary from the holy cradle to the rushing river side, where a community will gather together in celebration to laugh, sing and have a ball in celebration of the saviour's arrival.

For 'A Christmas Calabash', an excerpt from the salsa mass, the Missa Salsera will be performed, along with a special Lydian Steel performance of the samba-themed Brazilian Sleigh bells.  Original music composed and arranged for the full choir, soloists and ensembles will be premiered this year from Lydian Steel member and composer Astra Noel, eccentric Jazz arranger Mark Brewster, Tobagonian Folk and Calypso arranger John Jacob, young San Fernando composer Michael Hudlin and Gospel singer/songwriter Candice Caton, along with excerpts from the works of Tchesnokoff, Handel and Bach.

The second half of the concert will feature a Parang medley and a series of traditional Parang, French Creole ‘Creche’ songs, Calypso and Soca Parang favourites at the river side with fantastic set design by Gillian Bishop and costuming by Claudette Edwards inspired by the Peter Minshall mas band of 1983 entitled 'River'.

The grand finale of the show, will sweep audiences into the traditional season favourites and standards along with the Hallelujah Chorus with Tassa drums and a never-before seen surprise ending, proclaiming the greatness of God. Filled with the magic of music, the golden calabash is a symbol of unity that will be poured out to bring joy and return peace and community love to the land. May this season of the Christmas Calabash bring joy and perspective and happiness for the new year!
